Therefore, the total time involved from preproduction through postproduction to produce this wedding would be approximately:
• 6 hrs of preproduction
• 12 hrs of production
• 42 hrs of postproduction
Total Time: 60 hours
For me, most weddings can be twice or sometimes, even three times as much time! This is why I must charge what I do.
(E) = Expenses
There are dozens of forgotten hidden expenses in running a wedding photography business. These expenses might include film, processing, prints, packaging, digital memory cards, CDs, DVDs, faxes, phone calls, messengers, paper, ink cartridges, postage, assistants fees, meals, props, gas, mileage, transportation, parking, and lodging (if you are traveling out of town). Don’t overlook the small stuff. Next to photojournalists, wedding photographers, in particular, tend to have more repair bills than most other photographers because our gear gets used, tossed around, and banged up a lot. Everything related to the job is an expense, right down to the stickers on your envelopes. Once you’ve determined the expenses for a particular job, don’t forget to add the percentage you have determined for your monthly and ongoing costs into the expenses and your set.
For example, let’s say you determined that 50 percent of your monthly revenue comes from weddings and your total monthly overhead costs is approximately $4,000. You will then allocate $2,000 as a rough monthly overhead cost for your wedding business. If you can shoot two weddings a month, factor in $1,000 per wedding. If your initial start-up investment cost was $30,000, consider 50 percent of that for your wedding business ($15,000) and then take 10 percent for your monthly start-up expense rate ($1,500) and divide it by the two wedding jobs ($750 each).
